Julie Stone, LCSW, Managing Partner.
It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work,
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real jouney.
-Wendell Berry
Welcome! No matter what brought you here, I look forward to the privilege of joining you on your journey. Ultimately, I believe that life is all about experiencing personal growth and adapting to change. These processes can be uncomfortable and even downright difficult, and frequently you may not even know where to start. I believe in the power of therapy and its ability to promote growth, to provide and enhance perspective, and above all to foster hope in an atmosphere that is safe, supportive and nurturing.
A little bit about me.........
I have worked in a variety of settings since graduating in 2003 from Smith College, in Northampton, MA with my Master’s degree in Social Work. I began my counseling experience working for a nonprofit agency where I continue to provide in-home therapy and parent training to families who are at imminent risk of losing their children to foster care due to abuse and neglect. In addition, earlier in my counseling career, I completed a year-long internship at Hospice, managed a residential group home for adolescents, and worked for an agency specializing in treating clients with eating disorders. Currently, I am in private practice in downtown Wilmington, NC where my specialized clinical interests and expertise include both women's and men's issues (including adult survivors of childhood abuse), working with members of the LGBTQIA community, providing therapeutic support to clients in 12-step recovery programs, and assisting people as they navigate through major life transitions
Another area of focus for my clinical practice is working with college students who are in need of supportive therapy. College is usually a time when young adults begin their transition towards independent living. As we all know, college life can be very stressful considering the balancing act of academics, family demands, employment, and personal relationships. Therapy can be very helpful for students who might be struggling with stress management, time management, loneliness, managing symptoms of depression/anxiety, etc.
.
My orientation to counseling is based on a combination of theories. I draw heavily from Psychosocial, Narrative, Solution Focused, and Cognitive Behavioral therapies when working with clients. My approach is nonjudgmental, empathic and relational in nature. Ultimately, I believe the process of counseling involves a collaborative experience of helping clients find the resources and strengths within themselves to address whatever issue led to their seeking assistance from me. I truly believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship to promote healthing, growth and empowerment.
Throughout my clinical experiences, I have strived to offer culturally relevant services, always respecting the differences in family styles, cultures, and communities. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information, or would like to schedule an appointment. I recognize that if you are making this first phone call for counseling, you are probably fairly motivated to schedule an appointment as soon as possible – with that in mind, I am always available to see new clients within a day or two of their first phone call to the office.
